Quality of Soybean Seeds Produced During the Rainy Season in Saraburi Province and the Dry Season in Sukhothai Province in 2023 - 2024
Abstract
Soybean is an important economic crop in Thailand. Currently, the domestic production is insufficient to meet the demand, resulting in a large volume of soybean imports. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the quality of three soybean seed varieties; Chiang Mai 60, Chiang Mai 6, and Kasetsart 80 planted during the rainy and dry seasons in Saraburi and Sukhothai provinces. Seeds were randomly sampled to seed moisture test content using the capacitance type device (Humimeter FS4). Germination was tested using the between paper technique with 4 replications per replica, each replication consisting of 100 seeds, and determiner seed vigor test through accelerated aging and speed of germination. The data were statistically analyzed according to a completely randomized design. The results showed that the quality of the seeds did not differ significantly (p<0.05). The moisture content of the Chiang Mai 60 variety, produced in both the rainy and dry seasons, was the highest, followed by the Chiang Mai 6 variety produced in both seasons, while the Kasetsart 80 variety had the lowest moisture content in both seasons. The Kasetsart 80 variety produced in the dry season exhibited the highest germination rate, followed by the Chiang Mai 6 variety produced in the dry season. For the accelerated aging test, the Chiang Mai 6 variety produced in the dry season had the highest value, followed by the Kasetsart 80 variety produced in the dry season. As for the root emergence speed, the Kasetsart 80 variety produced in the dry season had the fastest rate, followed by the Chiang Mai 6 variety produced in the dry season. In conclusion, the soybean seeds of the Kasetsart 80 and Chiang Mai 6 varieties produced in Sukhothai Province during the dry season of 2024 had the highest quality when considering seed vigor.
