Evaluation of Yield Components and Genetic Clustering of Interspecific Hybrid between Saccharum sp. hybrid and S. spontaneum
Abstract
The drought problem is a major factor affecting sugarcane production in Thailand. Therefore, crossing between sugarcane cultivar (Saccharum sp. hybrid) and wild cane (Saccharum spontaneum) has been used to develop hybrid cane for drought tolerance. After selection of hybrid canes for drought tolerance, the selected hybrids will be evaluated for yield components to identify the hybrids with the highest. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the 26 interspecific hybrid canes for high yield potential. The hybrids were planted in the research station at Kamphaeng Saen district. Nakhon Pathom Province in 2019. The experiment was conducted by randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The result showed that total number of trunk, total weight, trunk weight, and sweetness were significantly different. Based on data analysis it was found that ku-58-2-42 presented the highest total number of trunk (44,000.00 trunk/rai), the ku-58-5-7 showed the highest total weight (22.25 tons/rai). The ku-58-4-108 presented the highest trunk weight (1.51 kg), and the ku-58-2-198 showed had the highest sweetness (21.87°Brix). The results of this research can be used to further evaluation of the interspecific hybrid canes with high yield potential in drought affected areas.
