Effect of Soil Depth in Upland Rice Cultivation on the Speed of Germination to Soil Surface
Abstract
Growing rice in upland field conditions must be put in the soil. When it rains, the seeds receive moisture and they germinate on the soil surface. The depth of the soil where rice seeds is one factor that affects the speed of germination to the soil surface. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the depth of the soil surface where rice seed was buried at various depths ranging from 5, 10, 15, and 20 centimeters. Upland rice, 4 varieties include Red curved rice, Red sticky rice, Black sticky rice and Mong jasmine rice were used and compare with Khao Dawk Mali 105. The results showed that after watering for 4 days at depth of 5 centimeters, rice began to emerge from the soil. Meanwhile, at a depth of 10 centimeters, rice began to germinate after watering for 10 days. At the depth of 15 and 20 centimeters, rice could not grow out of the soil. When considering the percentage of germination at 16 days after planting, it was found that at depth of 5 centimeters, the percentage of germination was higher than at depth of 10 centimeters. Therefore, depth of 5 centimeters is suitable for planting of upland rice.
