The Optimum Temperature and Duration for Hemp Seed Vigor Evaluation Using Radicle Emergence Test
Abstract
The vigor of hemp seeds is a characteristic beyond germination. Previously, seed vigor tests were time-consuming and laborious. This experiment aimed to test the potential of the seed vigor method of hemp, a new economic crop, through the radicle emergence (RE) test by using two hemp seed varieties. Germination test by growing on paper (Top of Paper technique, TP) and vigor testing using the accelerated aging (Accelerated aging, AA) test at 41°C for 72 hours were investigated, including a radicle emergence test at 2 incubating temperatures, namely 15 and 25°C, counting radicle emergences (2 mm in length) every day until 7 days. Then the data were analyzed according to the Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that the germination of the 2 varieties was not significantly different (p> 0.05), but seed vigor using AA test found that seed vigor of variety A was higher than variety B. This result was consistent with the radicle emergences test at 25°C. However, the radicle emergence test took less time than the AA test for 5 days.
