Abstract

Cassava mosaic disease causes a severe reduction in cassava growth and yield. It is necessary to breed cassava for cassava mosaic disease resistance. Cassava is the plant containing cyanogenic glucoside which can be transformed into cyanide. There was a report that cyanide affected on whitefly mortality. Therefore, the objective of this research was to study the linear regression between cyanide content in cassava leaves and cassava mosaic disease resistance in the area of high disease pressure due to whitefly population, in a total of 20 cassava lines from the cross of Hanatee (HNT) and the C33 variety, were analyzed. These hybrids were categorized into 3 distinct categories. Group 1 consisted of genotypes that exhibited resistance to cassava mosaic disease (R). Group 2 consisted of lines that are susceptible to disease and exhibit visible symptoms of cassava mosaic disease (S+), while group 3 comprised lines that are also susceptible to the disease but do not display any symptoms (S-). The experiment's findings indicated that the cyanide content in cassava leaves potentially affects the mechanism of resistance to cassava mosaic disease exhibiting a linear regression However, its coefficient of determination is insignificant. This makes it impossible to use a linear equation to predict the level of resistance to cassava mosaic disease from the amount of cyanide in the leaves.
