Classification of Paddy and Brown Rice Grain Size in the Native Rice Genetics
Abstract
Native rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important source of rice genetic diversity because the native rice is the original or local cultivar Farmers have been cultivating for a long time, with a wide variety of species that differ in each area, counted as genetic diversity, which is cultivated throughout all regions of Thailand. The objective of this study was to categorize the grain size of paddy and brown rice in the indigenous rice genes of 197 varieties of local Thai rice. By using 10 complete brown rice kernels to scan the seeds at 300 DPI resolution and import the images from the scan, the program to measure the size and shape of the seeds with the Rice Grain Analysis and Classification System program with the criteria for grouped as follows. The very long kernels ranged from 7-12 mm. Long kernels rang 6.6-7 mm. Medium kernels rang 6.2-6.6 mm. Short kernels were less than 6.2 mm. They are grouped as follows 1. 4 seed size groups: 151 varieties of long seeds, 17 long seeds, 15 medium long seeds and 14 short varieties of brown rice seeds. 177 varieties of slender seeds and 20 medium-shaped seed groups of rice seed size and shape could be utilized for future rice breeding. And can be used as a guideline for the conservation of native rice varieties correctly and appropriately.
