Effect of Removing Seed Coating Solvent on Germination of Maize
Abstract
Maize seeds are often facing problems of seed left over from the market. Almost all leftover seeds are coated with chemical material to prevent seed pathogens and insects at the early stages of growing. The chemicals may tend to infest seed quality testing process, especially in seed germination tests. This experiment aimed to study the solvents and methods of removing seed coatings butt do not affect germination of maize seed. Mize seed with 5 varieties, such as A, B, C, D and E; 10 samples in total, were washed with 3 different solvents: Methanol, Ethanol and RO water. The coated maize seed without washing was used as a control. The experiment was a completely randomized design with 3 replications each treatment. The results showed that washing the coated maize seed with RO water yielded percentage germination as same as the controlled seeds. There was no significant difference between controlled seeds and the uncoating seeds (washing with RO water and Ethanol) in various germination indices, such as t₅₀, U₇₅₂₅, AUC and MGT. Washing seed coatings with Methanol showed significant difference in t₅₀, U₇₅₂₅, AUC and MGT with the control.
