Ratio of Deep Rooting of F7 Lines Obtained by Crossing between Upland and Lowland Rice
Abstract
Rice development to be drought resistant can solve the problems of drought in rice production. Rice breeding to have good root characteristics is one of the goals to improve rice cultivars to be stable in drought conditions. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate ratio of deep rooting (RDR) of F₇ lines derived from cross between upland rice and lowland rice, Prayaleumgang (PLG) x Chainat 1 (CNT1) and PLG x Suphanburi 3 (SPR3), using the basket method. The experiments were conducted in green house at Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University. The results showed that KU1001-26-1 and KU1001-11-1 lines of cross PLG x CNT1 had the highest ratio of deep rooting in this cross as 0.46 and 0.43 respectively. They had value higher than female parent (PLG) and male parent (CNT1) which were ratio of deep rooting as 0.36 and 0.23 respectively. While, KU1002-11-1 and KU1002-13-1 lines of cross PLG x SPR3 had the highest ratio of deep rooting in this cross as 0.30 and 0.29 respectively. They had value lower than female parent (PLG) but high than male parent (SPR3) which were ratio of deep rooting as 0.20. Thus, the results indicated that the KU1001-11-1 and KU1001-26-1 lines had the potential of drought resistant.
