Effect of Field Corn Varieties on Growth, Yield Components and Physical Properties of Corn Silage
Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate of growth, yield components, and physical properties of 12 field corn varieties for silage production. The field experiment was conducted at Lopburi Research Station, Khok Charoen, Lopburi in 2021. The experiment was arranged in RCBD with 4 replications. The treatments consisted of 12 filed corn varieties (SW5720, SW5731, SW5819, SW5821, SW1, SW5, SW4452, K8915, S7328, WS410, NS2 and NS3). The basal fertilizer (15-15-15) was applied at the rate of 30 kg/rai and top dress fertilizer (Urea; 46-0-0) was applied at the rate of 30 kg/rai at 30 days after planting. Corns were planted 2 seeds/hole with 75x20 cm and provided sprinkler irrigation system. Corn was thinned 1 plant/hole 14 days after planting. The data collection was plant height at 75 days, leaf greenness, leaf/stem ratio, and death leaf percentage. Corn was harvested at 90 days after planting for measuring fresh and dry weight yield and was ensiled in a plastic bag for 21 days, after that physical properties were measured. The results showed that at 75 days after planting, SW5720 had taller than NS2, NS3, S7328, SW1, SW5731, SW5821 and SW4452 (check) (P<0.05). There was no significantly different in leaf greenness, while NS3 showed a higher leaf/stem ratio than others, except SW5819 (P<0.05). S7328 had higher fresh weight yield than all other varieties except K8915 (P<0.05). There was no significantly different in the physical properties of the 12 field corn varieties.
