Selection of New Sugarcane Clones for High Yield Potential at Lopburi Research Station
Abstract
Sugarcane is an important raw material in Thailand's sugarcane and sugar industries. Currently, Thailand has an area of approximately 11 million rai of sugarcane cultivation, producing a total sugarcane yield of more than 100 million tons. However, the sugarcane variety that farmers currently grow is the Khon Kaen 3 sugarcane variety, which has more than 90% of the sugarcane planting area in the country. This results in instability in sugarcane production in Thailand. This experiment aims to select new sugarcane clones from Kasetsart University with high yield potential at Lopburi Research Center. Eight clones, including KU-58-4-108, KU-58-5, KU-MTB-tr2-2, KU-58-4-84, KU-58-5-7, KU-58-4-85, KU-58-4-83, and KU-58-4-42, were compared with two commercial varieties, Khon Kaen 3 and Lampang 11. The experiment employed a randomized complete block design with three replications, planted in Khok Charoen, Lopburi province. By comparing growth and yield components, the assessment encompassed height development from 3 to 12 months after planting, as well as the collection of sugarcane production data, including stalk number per stool, stalk diameter, and stalk weight post-harvest. From the experiment, it was found that in the test when looking at the sugarcane yield, it was found that there was no difference. But when considering the sweetness value, it was found that each variety has a different sweetness value. When compared, it will be found that there are characteristics that cause differences. The sweetness value makes it have the potential to produce sugar as good as the KK3 variety and variety LK92-11 The sugarcane that has been tested is the clone sugar cane KU-58-4-108, KU-MTB-tr2-2, KU-58-4-85, KU-58-4-84, KU-58-4-83 และ KU-58-5 were selected to be further tested at the local level.
