Segregation of Male Sterility Trait in F2 Population Derived from Selfing of Hybrid Rice Variety RDH3
Abstract
Hybrid rice is an agricultural technology that used to increase rice yield per area. Hybrid rice takes advantage of its superiority over parents. However, the commercial production of hybrid rice requires a sterility system to be used in the seed production of hybrid rice. Male sterility was controlled by the cytoplasmic system. It was used in the production of rice hybrids variety RDH3. Introducing this genetic into breeding programs requires knowing the number of genes controlled. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to test the ratio between plants with male fertile and plants with males sterile. The F₂ population obtained from selfing of hybrid rice variety RDH3 were used. Male sterile was checked by staining pollen with I2-KI solution. Chi-Square Test was used for test ratio. The results show that the segregation between plants with male fertile and males sterile as 362 and 146 plants, respectively. It was fit a ratio of 3:1. Therefore, the genetics that control male sterility were controlled by a pair of recessive genes. This information will be used as basic information for developing female parent to produce 3-line hybrid rice systems
