Abstract

Seed vigour is a big problem of conventional cassava breeding program because this is the cause of non-uniformity of synchronization of flowering and fertilization. This experiment, therefore, aimed to enhance cassava seed vigour through various methods. Experimental design was 3x4 factorial experiment in completely randomized design. First factor was cassava cultivars which consisted of KU50, RY5 and RY90. Second factor was enhancing treatments, namely dry-heat treatment, scarification, hot water treatment and control (without treatment). The results found an interaction between the two factors. Considering the treatments, it was found that the dry-heat treatment made the cassava seeds of the 3 cultivars more uniformity of germination (based on the lower U₇₅₂₅ value, time interval between 25% and 75% of viable seeds to germinate). The scarification increased uniformity of germination (U₇₅₂₅ equal to 60.28 hours) but was still less than the dry-heat treatment (U₇₅₂₅ equals 57.47 hours). However, the hot water treatment would kill all tested cassava seeds. In other words, there was no germination after treating with the hot water treatment. Interaction was also found when considering in seedling qualities indices such as germination, seedling fresh weight, seedling dry weight and length of seedling. Dry-heat treatment caused higher percentage and uniformity of germination than hot water treatment. Scarification, however, caused higher seedling dry weight than other treatments. But seedling fresh weight and length of seedling from scarification and dry-heat treatment were not statistically significant difference. In conclusion, the dry-heat treatment is a convenient and effective method in enhancing cassava seed vigour.
