The Difference of Root Trait between Upland and Lowland Rice Varieties
Abstract
Rice improvement to good root trait was a goal for rice breeding to stability under drought conditions. Improved rice varieties with good agronomic characteristics often have a shallow root system since planting selection in lowland conditions. Thus, they were susceptible to drought. The goal of breeding to deep root system could more drought resistant. The objective of this study was compared root trait between upland rice and lowland rice Basket method was used. The experiment was conducted in green house at Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University. Rice was planted during September to December 2019. The results showed that shallow roots number (SRN), deep roots number (DRN) and total roots number of RD49, PTT1, KDML105 and PLG were tended to increase as the age of rice increased. Improved rice varieties including RD49 and PTT1 which are lowland rice were shallow roots number, deep root number and total roots number more than lowland rice (KDML105) and upland rice (PLG). Considering the ratio of deep rooting (RDR), was found that lowland rice varieties, RD49, PTT1 and KDML105, tended to increase with increasing age. While, upland rice variety, PLG was ratio of deep rooting tend to be relatively stable even though increasing age. Therefore, it shows that upland rice variety, PLG was good root traits to be used as a genetic source for rice breeding to be able to drought resistance.
