Amylose Content of F2 Progenies Derived from Crossed between Indica and Japonica Rice Types
Abstract
Almost consumers focus on soft cooked rice. The softness of cooked rice is due to amylose content in rice grain. If grain is high amylose content, cooked rice is hard. On the other hand, low amylose content, cooked rice is soft. Japonica rice is soft cooked rice that a good source of genetic material used in the breeding program. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to investigate amylose content of F₂ progenies derived from cross between indica and japonica rice types. The indica rice which has high amylose content, RD41 variety. The japonica rice which has low amylose content was, DOA2 variety. Spectrophotometer specific with amylose content in rice was used to measure the absorbance. The results showed that amylose content of F₂ progenies derived from cross between RD41 and DOA2 were vary from very low to high level. Lines with very low, low, medium and high amylose content were found for 3, 2, 7 and 3 line, respectively. It is noted that three lines with very low amylose content were lower than male parent, DOA2. In the theoretical was called transgressive segregation. It is often found in F₂ generation. They will be selected in another trait.
